Here is a list of the main programs and files on the Victor Charlie
distribution diskette.
Please remember that it is impossible to provide sizes, dates and other
particulars on the programs. Victor Charlie is manufactured in extremely
small lots, each of which has different characteristics. This provides
special security against viruses written to seek out Victor Charlie on
your computer. Sizes and dates of the first group of programs below may
vary from one shareware edition to the next.
VC This file, during initialization of Victor Charlie, becomes
VC.EXE. It is vital to the operation for the VC5 menu
interface, VC.BIN.
VC.BIN This is the actual menu program. Although it is an executable
program by the definitions of DOS, it only can be run by
using the VC command.
VC1 The dominant front-line VC5 program. After it is made to an
executable program (VC1.COM) and initialized, it is
responsible for checking the DOS system for Type 2 virus
infection. It also "baits" Type 1 viruses.
VC2 VC2, during initialization of your anti-virus program,
becomes VC2.EXE. Its primary role is to bait such
.EXE-infecting Type 1 viruses into attacking it.
VCHECK A powerful scanning program. Includes built-in logic to
detect virus codes with artificial intelligence and other
means. Produces lists of Bitchecks(tm) which serve to detect
future virus infections from any source.
VCHECK.CFG A sample file illustrating how to control the files to be
searched for virus signatures and Bitchecks by VC's
VCHECK.COM.
VCOMP VC5's most specialty program. It compares any two lists of
Bitchecks made by VCHECK, and reports differences. Such
differences may signal viral infection.
VC5.BAT Runs a fast anti-virus check any time after installation
from the DOS command line.
VC.HLP The help file for the main VC5 programs, excluding the menu
interface. This ASCII file can be rewritten to provide
context-sensitive help in any environment and in any foreign
language.
VIR.HLP The specialty help file for the VC5 menu shell.
VC.SIG A sample virus Signature Library file. As provided, this
library allows VCHECK to scan for common latent viruses. VC5
programs will update this file with signatures secured via
Real Time Signature Capture (RTSC) during virus attack.
(NOTE: The three .COM files following are virus-resistant but not virus-
proof. Bootfix and Ptresq, for safety's sake, will run only one time
from a hard disk, to prevent becoming a virus carrier.)
BOOTFIX When copied to executable form (BOOTFIX.COM), "sterilizes"
data and backup floppy diskettes to prevent the spread of
viruses carried in the boot sectors of such disks. Program
is self-documenting when run.
PTRESQ A generic cure for viruses in the hard drive partition
table. When copied to executable form (PTRESQ.COM), allows
the user to view a Master Boot Record (partition sector),
write a new MBR, or restore the old MBR in case of failure.
GET Interactive batch-file enhancer and more. Copy to GET.COM and
type "GET" for help.
And the following utilities:
VSEARCH.BAT Builds and compares Bitcheck(tm) lists for use in detecting
changes to virus-vulnerable files on any disk. Automates the
process monitoring changes to program files.
VBAIT.BAT A method of guarding data against virus bomb attacks. Uses
Bitchecking(tm) to keep track of data "bait" files.
ALTV.BAT Uses ANSI.SYS to, effectively, put VC5.BAT on a hot key
(Alt-V), to give routine anti-virus checks at a keystroke.
NOFALSE.BAT The built-in "intelligence" in VCHECK may cause false alarms
on some systems some of the time. This program makes a new
Victor Charlie program set with logic turned OFF.
WI.BAT An extra-program demo of Victor Charlie's VCHECK, used as a
fast "whereis" utility. Searches all available hard drives
for one or multiple files. Wildcards fine. Type "WI" for
reminder-help.
VINSTALL.BAT Used only during the installation process of Victor Charlie
Ver 5. Should be automatically deleted at the end of the
installation, and exist only in the distribution archive.
VCSTART.BAT A batch file to ensure regeneration of any Victor Charlie
programs which have "suicided" because of virus infection.
Also runs a quick, one-time check of the computer system.
Designed to be CALLed from Autoexec.BAT every time the
computer runs, and will be installated in Autoexec.BAT
during installation if the user wishes.
RESCDISK.BAT This batch file is used by VC (or at the command line) to
help in the making or a reliable "rescue diskette".
VC.DOC The main documentation for VC. This document is formatted
for easy printing by most printers, including laser-jets.
This 75-page document contains ALL relevant information you
need to run Victor Charlie, including how to customize the
program. Illustrations (screen dumps) have been omitted,
purely for technical reasons.
TECHREF.DOC A summary of all available commands, command-line
parameters and other technical information about all VC
programs. Note this is a "technical" document, tailored for
use mostly by advanced users familiar with DOS.
BANGKOK.DOC A brief description of Bangkok Security Associates -- who
we are, and what we make.
POLICY.DOC Bangkok Security Associates' policy for its software,
licenses, and customers. (These policies meet or surpass
recommendations by the Association of Shareware
Professionals, or ASP.
ORDER.DOC An easy form which you can use to order a registered
version of Victor Charlie. Includes addresses of agents.
SITE.DOC A description and sample configuration form for ordering
Victor Charlie for site and/or network use. Includes a list
of authorized agents in North America, Asia, Australia and
Europe.
FILE_ID.DIZ PCBoard BBS-compatible description of VC for BBS sysops
DESC.SDI 60-character, one-line descriptive file of VC for BBS sysops
PACKING.LST This document, listing all files in the VC shareware
distribution set (archive or diskette)
